Shinerama is a fundraiser campaign for Cystic Fibrosis Canada that has been active for over 50 years with over 60 colleges and universities from across Canada and 35,000 students. All money raised will go towards cystic fibrosis research and care.
To date, nearly $25 million has been raised for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Student volunteers across Canada are organizing events, taking to the streets, and doing whatever it takes to raise crucial funding for cystic fibrosis.
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. There is no cure.
Cystic Fibrosis causes various effects on the body, but mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. The degree of Cystic Fibrosis involvement differs from person to person. However, the persistance and ongoing infection in the lungs, with destruction of lungs and loss of lung function, eventually causes death in the majority of people who have Cystic Fibrosis. It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has Cystic Fibrosis.
Why do we fundraise?
The median age of survival for someone living with Cystic Fibrosis is 49.7 years. 50 years ago, when Shinerama began, the median age of survival was 6. The research conducted from Shinerama funds continues to increase the life expectancy of those battling cystic fibrosis. More efficient screening processes have also been developed to detect cystic fibrosis early or detect who is a carrier. Lastly, funds from Shinerama have improved the quality of life of those with cystic fibrosis, through better treatment, support, and equipment.
As motivational speaker Drew Dudley would say about Shinerama, “Is there anything more noble than saving the life of someone else?”
